"Sweet Dreams" is a song by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles from her third studio album, I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Written and produced by Knowles, James Scheffer, Wayne Wilkins, and Rico Love, the track was released as the album's sixth single. It was released in the United States for the Top 40 and rhythmic contemporary radios on June 2, 2009. Lyrically, the song describes a beautiful relationship, which the singer believes could be a dream.

Originally titled "Beautiful Nightmare", the song leaked in March 2008, eight months prior to the album's release. "Sweet Dreams" received widespread critical acclaim from music critics which praised its "spark", "energy", "dark tone" and "electropop sound". Some music critics even went on comparing the song with Michael Jackson's "Beat It". "Sweet Dreams" gained popularity for its electro-pop sound, which is in contrast to her earlier R&B, urban, and funk-tinged releases. The music video was directed by Adria Petty and shot in Brooklyn, New York. The golden robot suit that Knowles wears, was designed by French fashion designer Thierry Mugler. The video was well-received by critics after its premiere on July 9, 2009.

"Sweet Dreams" was promoted by Knowles with live performances during her world tour including her live performnce at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009 on November 5, 2009. The single topped the New Zealand Singles Chart. It peaked inside the top five in Australia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Russia, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. The song went on to be certified Platinum by the ARIA, the RIANZ and the RIAA, and was nominated for the "Viewers Choice Award" at the 2010 BET Awards.

Background and composition

"Sweet Dreams", one of the first songs composed for I Am... Sasha Fierce,[2] was originally called "Beautiful Nightmare".[3] It was written and produced by Knowles, along with Jim Jonsin, Wayne Wilkins and Rico Love.[4] The song leaked in March 2008, the day after it was recorded and eight months prior to the album's release. It was the first time a Knowles single had been leaked.[5] Knowles responded the leak on her official website, saying "I want to thank all my fans for the positive response to the song, but I want to tell you that this is just a work in progress".[3] Concerning the production of the song, songwriter Rico Love told to MTV News: "...that was the experience of a lifetime working with one of the greatest vocalists of all time. She came in and cut the song in an hour. She had to go. Jay-Z was opening up the tour with Mary J. Blige and B came in. She wasn't prepared to record, but heard the song and said, 'Let's do it.' It's actually my background vocals in the hook. She liked the way it sounded so we kept it".[5] About the leak, Love told MTV News: "I was more concerned that she would feel that we did it. A lot of times producers or songwriters leak records because they feel if you put the song out there it would go [on to become a hit]".[5] By the album's release, the song's structure had been altered: the phrase "turn the lights on" had been repeated throughout the chorus, a third refrain had been added after the climax, and the name had been changed to its current title.[4]

"Broken-Hearted Girl" was initially embarked as the sixth US and fourth worldwide single alongside the US-Only single "Ego".[6] However, at the last minute, its release was scrapped, and "Sweet Dreams" was released instead. Both tracks were taken from the Sasha Fierce disc, which contrasts with other joint-releases from this album where one track is taken from each disc.[4]

"Sweet Dreams" is an R&B-electropop song, written in the key of E Minor, with a vocal range from D4 to F♯5.[7] It is set in common time composed in a moderate groove tempo of 130 beats per minute.[7] Its lyrics describes a beautiful relationship, which the singer believes could be a dream.[4] The song's electronic baseline is compared to Michael Jackson's "Beat It".[2][8]

Critical reception

"Sweet Dreams" was critically lauded, with critics praising its dark tone and its electropop sound. The Times was praised with the song: "[The song] with its deep bass, and disturbed lyrics, is thrilling".[9] James Montgomery of MTV calls the song "great", commenting that "The gnarly low end (which kind of sounds like Michael Jackson's "Beat It" for about half a second), the spare snare kicks, the expansive-yet-molecular chorus — sonically, it's as adventurous as anything she's ever released. And her vocals — icy and cool, slippery like mercury — are nothing to scoff at either. All in all, it's another undeniable smash ... sort of unsettling, kind of crazy, totally unlike anything anyone else is doing right now (sorry Gaga)".[2] Alex Denney of Dotmusic said that "Only the club-flavoured 'Sweet Dreams' rivals 'Single Ladies' for genuine spark and energy".[10]

Bill Lamb of About.com said that "'Sweet Dreams' heads heavily into synthesized electronic pop territory. The haunting lyric and Beyoncé's self-assured vocals make this track another solid success... The vocal performance here possesses an elegantly gliding tone that perfectly maintains the tension in the lyric and arrangement. ... However, she tempers it with a stunning sense of control. Each time she climbs into agitation here it is almost as if she takes a quick breath then settles herself back to a slightly less tense state". Even though he praised the song, Lamb also said "[It] misses that intangible element of pure magic".[11] Ryan Dombal of Pitchfork Media said that the song sounds like a Rihanna work.[12] Nick Levine of Digital Spy wrote on his critique of the album that "The best song [on the Sasha Fierce disc], a dark(ish) electropop track called 'Sweet Dreams', actually sounds like the cousin of Rihanna's 'Disturbia'".[13] Also, on the single review, he awarded the song four out of five stars, commenting "The song is Beyoncé's first electropop tune. ... Built on a bassline that wouldn't sound out of place on Thriller or Bad, 'Sweet Dreams' snares you with its irresistible chorus hook, then keeps you intrigued by placing a hint of darkness".[8]

"Sweet Dreams" earned Knowles the 2009 Music MP3 Awards for "Best Female Vocal" (BFV Award) on November 15, 2009,[14] and another award for "Best Costume in a Video (Female)" at the OVMA World Awards. "Sweet Dreams" was also nominated for "Best R&B/Urban Dance Track" at the 25th Annual International Dance Music Awards held in 2010, but lost to "I Gotta Feeling" of The Black Eyed Peas,[14] and was nominated for the "Viewers Choice Award" at the 2010 BET Awards.[15]

Chart performance

"Beautiful Nightmare" gained some attention in the United States, appearing at number 45 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs, and at number 57 on Billboard Pop 100 Airplay in very early 2009 shortly after the album's release.[16] "Sweet Dreams" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 97.[17] It reached the top 40 in early September 2009,[18] and it peaked at number ten on two separate occasions in early November 2009.[19][20] The song gave Knowles her thirteen top ten as a solo artist, in the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100. With the song's advance, she ties Ludacris and T-Pain for second-most top tens on the chart since 2000 while Knowles' husband, Jay-Z, leads with 14 in that span.[21] The single had peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip Hop Chart, making I Am... Sasha Fierce the first album of the 21st century to have seven entries on the chart ("Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", "If I Were a Boy", "Diva", "Halo", "Ego", "Sweet Dreams", and "Video Phone").[22] The song has also peaked at number five for three consecutive weeks on the Billboard Pop Songs in November 2009.[23][24][25] "Sweet Dreams" was certified Gold on October 28, 2009, and it was later certified Platinum on January 5, 2010 by RIAA.[26]

The single also performed well internationally. It initially entered the UK Singles chart on July 5, 2009, at number 189, more than a month prior to its physical release.[27] The following week, it soared to number 52,[28] and it eventually continuously ascended the chart reaching a peak number five on August 9, 2009, (one day before its official release there) making it her sixth solo top five single.[29] The song was last seen on the chart on January 23, 2010, after having spent 26 weeks in the top 100.[30] In the week ending June 18, it was the most added song of the Australian radio stations.[31] On August 9 chart, "Sweet Dreams" rose from number nine to its peak of number two, to become the fourth song from I Am... Sasha Fierce to peak inside the top five and the highest charting single from the album in Australia.[32][33] It stayed within the top ten for nine consecutive weeks.[33] The song was last seen on the chart on March 1, 2010, after having spent 38 weeks in the top 100.[34] In New Zealand, the single débuted at number 39, and climbed to number one four weeks later, staying there for three consecutive weeks.[35] "Sweet Dreams" has also been the number-one most added song on New Zealand Radio Airplay as from September 21, 2009 till October 26, 2009.[36] The song debuted at number 17 on July 16, 2009, in Ireland, and quickly climbed to its peak position at number four after only four weeks on the chart.[37][38] The single stayed in top ten for eight weeks and charted for nineteen weeks in the chart.[39]

In Norway, "Sweet Dreams" debuted at number 19 on September 1, 2009, being the highest debut of that week.[40] The single kept on alternating between number 13 and number 15 for the next seven weeks. However, after eight weeks on the chart, the song eventually peaked at number six.[41] It was certified as the "Greatest Gainer" for one week there, and spent 14 consecutive weeks in the chart.[42] On November 22, 2009, "Sweet Dreams" débuted at number 46 in the Spanish Singles Chart,[43] but left the chart three weeks later after having initially set a peak at number 36.[44] It managed to re-enter the chart on December 27, 2009, at number 42.[45] On February 7, 2010, it moved from number 15 to its peak at number nine.[46] It remained in the chart until the end of April 2010.[47]

This is the third such-titled song to reach the Top 10 of the Hot 100, following "Sweet Dreams" by Air Supply, in 1982, and Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics, in 1983.[21] An unofficial remix, featuring Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, leaked on some websites on March 9, 2010 and was included on Wayne's mixtape No Ceilings.[48][49]

Music video

The video premiered on July 9, 2009, on MTV.[50] It was directed by Adria Petty (who also directed Duffy's video for "Mercy") and was shot in Brooklyn, New York City. This video is the second from the album to have complete color throughout; "Halo" was the first.[51] "Sweet Dreams" and "Video Phone" extended remix with Lady Gaga were both mixed by Destiny's Child/Beyoncé Pro Tools Engineer William "Vybe Chyle" Burke at Vybe Chyle Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.[52] On June 12, 2009, a behind-the-scenes video was released in which Beyonce's dance rehearsal was included. In this footage, Knowles was seen wearing all-gold costumes and doing some robotic movements. [53] The video was not included on Above and Beyoncé – Video Collection & Dance Mixes as it was not finished by the time the CD/DVD collection was made. Instead, a "Making of Sweet Dreams" video was included on the remixes and video album.[54] Portions of the "Sweet Dreams" music video were inspired by a video in which British designer Gareth Pugh presented his autumn/winter 2009 show.[55]

Concept and synopsis

A women wearing a golden metallic corset and a pair of sleves of the same material, is standing and looking forward.
The outfit dress that Knowles wears in the music video was designed by Thierry Mugler.

The music video was said to be a more "graphic" video than the others and its motive was said to be "take Sasha to the next level", as stated by Knowles in the B-roll footage of Above and Beyoncé - Video Collection & Dance Mixes.[56] Concerning the video, Knowles said: "It's basically saying that this relationship is so wonderful that it scares me... is it a sweet dream or beautiful nightmare?"[57] The golden robot suit that Knowles wears in the video, is to symbolize her Sasha Fierce alter-ego.[58]

The video opens with Knowles tossing and turning in her bed. As she tries to stay asleep, Brahms's Lullaby plays softly in the background. She then levitates off her bed as her dream unfolds. In her dream Knowles is transported to a desert in a black Roberto Cavalli outfit, and her two back-up dancers (Saidah Fishenden and Ashley Everett) appear as the music begins. The cut after the desert sequence starts by showing Knowles inscribed with a circle and square just like in Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, symbolizing Knowles' ideal human proportions. On the first chorus, she wears a silver one shouldered minidress. The Second chorus shows Knowles in another silver ensemble, a lined body suit while smashing mirrors. During the bridge, the video fades to black and white and Knowles appears in a gold robot suit (The outfit in Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" video was later compared to Beyonce's dress[59]) designed by French fashion designer Thierry Mugler, as well as gold and diamond nail rings valued at $36,000 by Bijules designer Jules Kim.[60] Then, the gold outfit is reused, but this time in color. Knowles says "Turn the lights out" and the video ends.[61]

Reception

Bill Lamb of About.com praised the video: "Watching the accompanying video is necessary for the full impact of 'Sweet Dreams'. By three minutes into the clip when she appears in a gold metallic outfit, it's clear we are watching another Beyoncé classic. She is at the top of her form as an artist and taking chances that often only the hungriest of artists take".[62] MTV said that the video is "An eye-popping, herky-jerky, high-fashion video... So, once again, we get Beyoncé popping her pelvis in ways never imagined. We get Beyoncé strutting with her two doppelgängers. And we get Beyoncé wearing about a million flashy, asymmetrical costumes. She expands on her burgeoning robot fetish (which I think is supposed to symbolize her Sasha Fierce alter-ego), flashes the crazy eyes and contorts her body in downright unsettling ways. All of which is to say that 'Sweet Dreams' is just like every amazingly crazy Beyoncé video from the past three years, which — to extend the point — also means that it's pretty great".[58] The music video stayed at number one for a number of weeks on the UK TV Airplay Chart in August and September 2009.[63] The commercial version of the video ranked at number 13 on BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2009 countdown.[64]

Promotion

Knowles was due to perform the song at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13.[65] However, the performance was changed to "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)"; she only performed the bridge from "Sweet Dreams" at the beginning of her performance, before switching to "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)".[66] She also performed the song at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards on November 5, 2009.[67] At the final of a show of her I Am... Tour on November 2009, Knowles sang the full version of "Sweet Dreams" on the B-Stage for the first time, instead of a snippet or an acoustic version.[68] The song is used in the commercial Knowles did for Crystal Geyser. On it she appears dancing and drinking water while the song is played in the background.[69][70]
